Help!!
« on: August 08, 2009, 08:44 »
Haven't been here for a while, but I know there's lots of lovely chicken help to be found!

Have an ISA brown who was fine yesterday and this morning she is huddled at the back of the shed, eyes closed and her breathing is laboured.  Her feathers are fluffed out.  We have had red mite, but so far as I can tell, we're on top of it.   Advice would be appreciated!
Sue

No it's a little paler, but not what I would call really "sick" pale.  It was a little paler yesterday too.

The problem is there are a few things it could be in this instance and without physically examining the bird, it is difficult in this instance, and probably the vet would be the next step.
It could be a type of enteritis(digestive infection)or enlarged liver, by the symptoms so have at look at the poops. What feed have you been giving? any chance it got damp or could she have picked up something mouldy? Does she feel hot, and discharge or rattling from the chest apart from "labooured" breathing?

Her chest isn't rattly.  She is on the normal layer's pellets.  We have had a lot of rain and the run has been quite muddy.  She could have picked up something mouldy.

I'm sorry, I have to go out now! I haven't gone away...

all i can say after my last week, is that when she looks ill, she is really quite poorly, as i was advised by several on this site.
we tried extra treats to try to feed ours up before they went, and found that they like tomatoes, which with a higher than normal acid content may help, as does acv.

There's no improvement.  The poos have been a bit runny.   Enteritis?

Late yesterday afternoon, I wandered out thinking we would have to do the deed, and there she was out in in the run!  This morning she didn't come out so I opened the door and she was on the perch, hopped off and ran outside. Clearly she is still not over whatever she has but sheis a different girl from yesterday.
