Storing onion set storage.
« on: January 18, 2013, 09:19 »
Good morning,
I received my onion and shallot sets yesterday, but my first raised bed isn't finished yet as there's just the small issue of waiting for my topsoil delivery and the typically British weather. So in the meantime I need to store them. Am I right to assume that they need to be kept in the cool/cold and dark for instance, the garage?

Thank you in advance for all replies.

Jane.

Certainly cool, but light is better.

If they do start shooting, the leaves won't get drawn trying to look for light.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They'll probably be OK. Unlike seed spuds, they'll stand a bit of frost.

I would spread the sets out, rather than leaving them in a heap in the bag, and personally I wouldn`t store them in a shed where the atmosphere is damp. Coolest room in the house for me.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I had a similar situation last year and more so this year. The ground is either water logged or rock hard. I filled seed trays with damp multi compost and the shallots are sitting on top. They will germinate and I will transplant them when conditions are right.
The birds don't usually pull them out and I can disregard those that don't germinate.

I spread them out in a large but shallow cardboard box, lined with some paper. (Boden online delivery boxes do look rather smart!)

I'm concerned about having them in doors as I fear that even the coolest room will not be cool enough. Having said that I may well give Ivor Backache's idea a go...?

Caroline,
For spring planting shallots the seed catalogue says Feb, March and April to harvest July, Aug and September.
