Winter greens
« on: July 05, 2009, 20:56 »
My chooks LOVE greens and have been getting loads as I have been thinning out the veggies for weeks and they get all the tops. They also get moved round the "lawn" (??) every few days so have grass as well. Question is....WHAT AM I GOING TO DO IN THE WINTER?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received. ::)

I have greens like kale and beet spinach that I have planted specifically for them. The kale should help over winter.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Mine no longer have any grass/plants as they destroyed the entire lawn and borders in 3 months  ::) They do get the whole of the garden all day long, with just the patio with veg fenced off from them. They have bark and slate to scrabble in and I throw them greens in each day, which they ingnore! I debated putting down a new lawn for them, but that could get very expensive  :)

cabbage.  (and other green leafy veg)
if you run out of your own, go to the supermarket late in the evening and pick up the reduced ones.

I'm thinking through the grass problem at the moment, in anticipation, another 3 weeks till ours arrive.
The real damage to lawns seems to be through scratching and dust baths.  So, I was wondering about growing grass for them in hanging baskets?  That way they could only peck, and not scratch, assuming I can get the height right   It might take some trial and error, but you can adjust height with lengths of chain or even rope.

Necessity is the mother of invention?

They do like to scratch though to try and find seeds, bugs worms etc and to rake up the soil for a dust bath (mine have never liked clean sand  :D)
Staffies are softer than you think.

More on topic though, spinach beet is great for chooks both in the green and as it runs up to seed. Sow some in plugs now and they can browse all the way through the winter. I'm about to move my old crop bag and baggage into their run!
