problem alliums
« on: February 27, 2011, 23:43 »
I have sandy soil in which alliums thrive.  When we moved here (somerset) there were green alliums with big strappy leaves growing from a bulb with multiple bulblets attached.  growing in various places around the garden.  I try to remove them when i see them but they are hard to dig up and its harder to ensure youve collected all the bulblets.  They seem to be back with a vengeance this year.
When shall i make another attempt on them??
And how would you do it?? I did try sifting the soil in one area but they're back there too!   :( :(

Use the hoe, if you remove all the leaves the bulbs will die off.

I have had that problem with bluebells, Allium christopherii and a smaller white allium with floppy thin leaves whose name I have forgotten at the moment. I dug loads out and I still got them coming up from the tiny bulbils left but, if you persist, they will be a lot less the next year.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
