Shallots & Onions
« on: May 16, 2010, 09:08 »
Hi,

I've noticed a few of my onions and shallot leaves are not 'standing tall' and are laying on the ground - is this normal? For example, on the Shallots there are about 12-15 leaves, and 2 of them are not strong enough to stand upright. Similarly on the onions one of the 3 leaves on a few of the sets are doing the same thing.

Also, do the sets themselves go soft before the start to swell to full size, as this appears to be what is happening?

My onions are doing the same. One of the leaves has leaned over and doesnt appear strong enough to continue growing upright.

I understand that the bulb uses its initial energy to produce the leaveswhich can cause the bulb to go soft and then later the leaves gather the energy to grow the bulb. So yes i think this is normal.
The force is strong in this one!

Yes, this is normal. Give them a light sidefeeding now for a boost. This can be compost, or a bit of rotted manure or comfrey tea, whatever you have.

My onions, but not shallots, have done this too.  Just given them some NPK feed...hopefully the warmer weather promised this week will do the trick...
Now then, I am a very pleasant lad from York.  I have a decent half plot on Holgate allotments.
