Chicken sea of green?
« on: May 14, 2014, 18:27 »
I am thinking of using a very large tray (1000mm x 600mm x 150mm) I have to plant some greens for my little flock. I aim to place a wire grid on top for the tops of the green feed to grow through giving the girls a sustainable greed feed source.

Any advice on what to plant? I thought about scattering some wild bird seed in there and see what comes up but that seems a little haphazard.

If I have a spare patch of ground, I chuck some of their mixed corn down to grow.  My lots love the greens  :)

I think I'll go for that too......

I might try half of wild bird and half corn see what transpires :=]

Grass is as good as anything. If you had two trays you would have one to eat and one to recover. :)

I grow a couple of rows of perpetual spinach, about 40 plants, this is enough to give my 12 hens a good bunch every day from about now until December.

Might be fun to try several things to see what grows well and what they like.  A landscaper might give you a bit of leftover turf if you want to speed it up!
