Wood anemones
« on: March 19, 2014, 23:41 »
I recently ordered four wild spring flowers “in the green” and they all arrived today.

The bluebells, wild garlic and wild daffodils all look fine, and I will plant them on our next dry day.

However, the Wood Anemones [Anemone nemorosa], which were advertised as “in the green”, have arrived as dry rhizomes.

I thought that these rhizomes should have been planted last autumn.

Does anyone know if they will flower this year if I plant them now?

To reply to my own post!

I have now contacted the supplier, who says that they should flower this year, if planted now.

If the rhizomes are dry, I would soak in a bucket of water for a couple of hours or so before planting to ensure they get rehydrated.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Following Goosegirls advice, I soaked the rhizomes.

However, I put them in an old washing-up bowl, and almost covered them with water.

They stayed like that for about a week; I didn't let them dry out, and I thought I could see some sprouting.

I planted them about a month ago, but there is no sign of any shoots.

Is it still too early?

In our area, wood anemones flowered a month ago and we now have a carpet of green leaves.

Perhaps you should contact your supplier again and let them know that the corms have not grown at all.

How disappointing for you

GG did say to soak them for a couple of hours, not a week!

Despite that, if they were advertised as "in the green", the product was not supplied as advertised and you have right of recourse.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Quite right! Dry rhizomes are definitely not as advertised. Are they a reputable firm? If so, they need a good slap!

Thanks to all for your replies.

They came from a firm that I have used often before for bulbs etc, with no problems.
The anemones were delivered with wild garlic, wild daffs and bluebells, that were all actually "in the green".
When I asked about the "dry" anemones, I was assured that they were "OK".

I will have a dig later and see what has happened to them.
