Rhubarb and brassicas
« on: June 07, 2012, 10:00 »
I was busy planting out my brassicas yesterday (4 x red cabbage, 10 x green cabbage, 6 x Brussels and 8 x cauli) my plot neighbour asked me if I had ever thought of putting a piece of rhubarb in the brassica planting hole as a club root deterant. He says it reduces club root by 60%. He is a very knowledgable chap and always gives me advice, so I thought 'why not'. Got loads of rhubarb spare so 1-2 inch piece of rhubarb went into each hole. Has anyone else heard of this?
I hope it works, out of 12 spring cabbages planted last year, 1 fell prey to a very determined pigeon and 6 just keeled over and died

Heard of it yes, any use: no!

Club root likes acid conditions so putting rhubarb in increases acidity = not going to help

One of those urban myths  ::)

Better solution (if you actually do have club root) is to grow plants in modules and plant them out at about 4 - 6 ins tall, when they have a fighting chance. Add lime to the soil before planting, and keep plants netted against butterfiles and pigeons  :)

I thought it sounded a little too simple to be of benefit. All my brassicas were about 6 inches high when I planted them out, didn't put any lime in though.

If they are growing well then the roots are functioning properly, so no club root.

You can easily tell if there is something wrong as they don't thrive  :)
