Slugs
« on: March 03, 2012, 01:07 »
Hi is there any easy/cheap way of killing slug (that works better)?

I've tried this
Slug watering hole
Cut the bottom 4" off from the base of a milk carton. Sink the base into the soil so the top rim is level with the soil. Fill (bait) with beer (Hard to give it away). They go in some die had 6 in there the other day but there was about 20 drunken trails leading away from it?

 :)
Dear God, Please can you stop the wind and rain and bring on the nice weather. Amen

I've always thought that baited traps just encourage the beggars to roam across your plot in the direction of the beer/other and probably munch en route or at least spread them all over the place

I have a 'bucket of death' and any slug/snail I find gets popped in there.

Proactive is best.  Go slug hunting.  They'll be under almost anything - stones, slabs, bags, planks, big clumpy top dressing etc etc.

NO ! ! !   leave a lip of about 1/2" proud of the soil surface to stop the benificial ground beetles falling in.   I know it's a luverly way to go, but we need the ground beetles.     Cheers,    Tony.

I think he meant to leave a lip sticking up above the ground level so that rgound beetles donlt fall in, not to stop slugs escaping

The beer trap method has produced a few dead bodies for me, but it seems all the slugs can't find the pub or just prefer my seedlings...
I use the kitchen sink method... ie i throw everything at them... when it comes to slugs, this is war. Beer baits, organic slug pellets, crushed egg shells...
And my personal favourite... hunting them down and attacking them with a scissors... snip snip snip snip snip... i'm sure they compost down nicely...

It's been very dry here so not much slug action yet. After the rain forecast tomorrow I expect they'll be out in their hundreds and I'll be going round the beds with a torch and scissors at 11-12 pm.
This works really well for me. I get the big ones (snip snip) and squash the snails and leave them lying dead. They either get eaten by birds/hedgehogs or other slugs come to eat them the next night and I get those too. Cunning , eh? This prevents mating (have you seen them at it?......disgusting!)
If you do your hunts religiously you'll soon notice numbers decreasing.
The only ones I really have trouble with are the tiny black ones in the soil but at least they don't do so much damage as the huge ones.
I also use organic pellets but they need some rain to work.......

I tried the beer traps a couple of years ago, sinking bottles filled with cheap beer.  2 fledgling blue tits took a swim, had to rescue and wash off.  They did survive
