when we made our raised beds there were no worms in them - i know cos of the mix of soils and compost that went in - but 6 months on - lots of them - wait a bit and i am sure they will move in - worms get in the most extraordinary places

When the conditions are right they'll come.
If you want to hurry things up then once the conditions are right fork some grass clippings into the soil - your grass clippings will have some worm eggs associated with them, and also provide them with food to give them a start.

Having said all this I've only ever read about it, and not tried it. After three years of cultivation/addition of compost/improved drainage my previously compacted and worm-free soil is now a lumbricus party-zone.

 8)  8) 8) Sun sun sun!
Seriously now...I dug bean trenches in my 18" raised beds today and there were loads of HUGE earthworms in the bottom that I didn't put there last year when I built them. Having added loads of unrotted paper, cardboard, kitchen waste, chicken poo and garden waste I hope the little red worms will have a feast too.

Just how much bfb was added ? A little scattered on the top or did you pour loads in then chuck the worms on top ?

I've noticed that the soil in my new plot doesn't have loads of worms. It's just as well that I kept the bin full of compost that I grew spuds in last year. Id rehomed some worms that I found under leaves in my garden and whilst putting this lovely dark compost into my potato bed this weekend I found that they'd multiplied! I hope they enjoy their new found freedom!
