Potato storage
« on: July 16, 2009, 21:36 »
I don't seem to be able to buy any large paper bags or hessian sacks to store spuds.
Admittedly I'm being presumptuous as I don't know if I have any potatoes as I haven't dug anything up yet. I can get white cotton sacks used in gyms, laundries etc, would these be OK to use?
Or should I just leave em in the ground and dig up when required, that's what my mate does, but perhaps the slugs will get them before I do.  :)

Thanks.

Edit. I can also get a few onion sacks but I thought they would be best, well, for my onions.

We have a greengrocer in our village and he very kindly gives me his paper potato bags when he's finished with them - recycling at it's best!! Might be worth asking at your local supermarket.

Not sure whether the white sacks would keep them dark enough muddylou. Have a look on e-bay, there's 56 results for potato sacks, and be positive of course you'll need them :) failing that, I wonder if you could use cardboard boxes like you can with carrots? I'm sure some-one cleverer than me will be along shortly  :)

Ive struggled buying hessian sacks so have bought some of ebay, should get them soon i hope.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

You could try your local chippy - not the woodworking kind  ::)

Failing that do you know anyone that keeps chickens/pigeons as their feed often comes in paper sacks.

Thanks all for replies and the Ideas, I've gone for the eBay Idea and just bought two 50kg hessian sacks (there's positive thinking)  :D
Just thought I could re-use these for many years, thanks again all.  :)
