Is this the right time to reduce the size of my magnolia tree which is too close to the house and do I need to paint the cuts with Arbrex please?

I've had a look in my RHS book and it would seem to be the right time, yes.

I don't think that it is considered necessary these days to use wound sealant; certainly the book envisages 'slow recovery, with wound sealing in the first year' [i.e. the plant deals with its own sealing]

Mine has had lumps removed at all times of the year, either due to nature or my mates tractor getting past it to my paddock at the end of my garden and its bounced back every time. But as the sap is beginning to drop, now until Nov is probably best as they bloom in end of winter/ early spring, flowers first then comes the foliage. We had the best show ever from it in all that snow we had this year.
