Can I make jam with unripe plums, or let the brown rot take them?

As fast as the plums ripen on our mature Victoria plum tree the dreaded brown rot takes hold and ruins them.

Ideas - swish the plums in a mild solution of household bleach to kill the spores and then put into a paper bag (when dry) with a banana to speed ripening?

Put them straight into a paper bag and hope? ???

I'm going to severely prune the tree and 'dispose' of them in the hope I will remove as much of the spores/diseased branches as I can.  I might try the milk spray idea next year. ;)

Your thoughts please.   Cheers,    Tony.

I think Spana managed to make jam from her unripe fruit:

Spama seems to imply that she made a chutney rather than a jam.  Just as 'she' has, I have sufficient chutney so I'll give 'green plum jam' a try.

Thanks argyllie and cheers,    Tony.

I thought she said she did both. ;) See how you get on, I don't fancy the sound of bleach on the fruit and as you say you'll lose them to rot otherwise.

What about using campden tablets on them?  I make wine now and again so have these around and have used them on tomatoes picked green due to blight before.  I still lost a few but most did ripen OK  :)

Try a weak solution of Milton. !/4 tsp to 250 ml of water.

It is good for babies bottles.

Then let them airdry and try the banana in a bag.

I use the solution to spray my kitchen surfaces after cleaning to get them really clean.

Never thought of that -- good tip: Thanks  :D
