Polytunnel on dwarf wall
« on: March 06, 2014, 11:20 »
Has anyone secured a polytunnel to a dwarf wall?   How did you do it?   We have an extensive dwarf wall at the top of our plot which used to have a large greenhouse on top of it.   Sadly we inherited the glass all smashed up in the bottom.

We have now been given an old diy type polytunnel which was previously sited directly on the soil, but seemed rather low in height, but it almost matches the dimensions of the wall exactly. We would like to attach it to the dwarf wall, making it more of a standard height and utilising what is already there.  We are thinking of attaching base plates to the wall and fitting the pipes to these.  Will this be strong enough?

Any help gratefully received.

Need a bit more info be any real help Anne, How tall is the wall and what's it made from brick, block or stone and what are the material and size are the pipes.

Just screwing the pipe to a base plate might not be enough, It may pay you to firmly fix a base plate to the wall, then attach a goodly sized vertical board (6x1) to give more fixing area. It's a lot easier to fix a plank to the wall than a 2" pipe.

Lardman,  the wall is about 2'6" high and is made of double thickness brick.  It looks quite solid.   The pipes are about 25mm steel.

Hi you could secure it wall, what I would do is put sole plates ( Planks of wood) down on top of the wall and secure the plates to the wall with rafter straps (pick these up at builder merchants). Then secure the polytunnel to the sole plates.

If you secure straight to the wall, first bit of wind the ploy and wall will part company
