I have 3 bulbs of garlic, ready to plant 3rd week in October.

Someone has told me that I need to break the full bulbs down, so I have approx 18-20 cloves and then place them in a bag and then in the fridge for 2 weeks prior to their burial as this will enable them to split and create a good full bulb.

Is this correct.

 :D
Thanks

I never have but I think it might be necessary when planting hardnecks in warmer soils where the temperature isn't cold enough over winter to break dormancy.  I don't think we have that problem in the UK though just yet, but with global warming who knows when we might  :?

Not sure though so hopefully someone will come along who knows for sure  :D

I don't think it's necessary really. They need a cold period over the winter or you will just get one big clove, undivided.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Now is actually a good time to plant garlic cloves. It's the length of time they're in cold, winter soil that will give you full heads (of cloves) in early summer. During winter the clove (leave paper skins on) will set its roots and come spring it will start to divide itself and be ready by mid July or so.
If you don't split the actual heads into their individual cloves for planting, you'll only get very small, bunched up cloves.

You split the garlic into cloves and plant the individual cloves.

I did not allow the first crop I planted to get cold and the result was disappointing. After that I read about getting them cold for a few weeks and the next time was much better, decent crop and lots of crunchy garlic bulbs. But this was from a spring planting not autumn.

However I suspect that our winters are cold enough if they are planted out now. Spring plantings would be different.

I find it easiest to simply keep my garlic in the fridge prior to planting so I suppose that I get them cold in the fridge then they get cold in the ground. Sort of get them both ways, but they get cold.

Yes, applied before warm summer weather comes in the spring.

I'm about to plant some garlic cloves. One question, do I have to wait until they start sprouting before planting?
Cheers
