Dreaded mould/fuzz on top of seed compost
« on: March 15, 2006, 09:19 »
My (brand new bought a few weeks ago) seed compost, in the seed plug tray, is sprouting furries. Are my seeds all doomed to be dead now? Nothing's come up yet since I only planted 2 days ago and I had them covered because I thought generally that was okay until the seedlings appeared but now I'm worried  :( Some of the seeds were just surface sown.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

I've had this and sometimes the seeds came up OK. I think humid air may be the cause of your problem.

I've left the cover off of them now. I hope they still come up. Would planting some new seeds on top better my chances or not? Hm... I'm not sure if the fuzzies just kill when they're visible or if they leave any sort of toxins in the compost... Bah this isn't a great start to my growing year  :?

First rule of gardening - DON'T PANIC :)

Give it a week to see what happens, you can always catch up.  It may be you have some duff compost - try getting a small bag of different compost from a different supplier. You may have been given old stock or something.

Even the experts have problems, all part of the fun (honest)

Going along with the suggestion of wait a week, I double checked the germination times for what I planted and it looks like only the basil should come up within a week/another 2-3 days (parsley ~21 days, summer savory ~10 days, who knows how long shiso germinates...). I guess I should get on with sowing some cauli in 3" pots today. Beautiful and sunny here though still a little cold.
