Venus Flytrap looking very sick !!
« on: January 21, 2013, 22:14 »
Hi Guys.
We have a venus flytrap that we bought from our local G.S. last Easter & did all the things it said on the label, it seemed to be doing well & produced loads of stems with traps & they cought a few fly's. it was only in a tiny pot which now seemed to small so we re-potted it into a larger pot using the correct compost & it seemed to be o.k. but over the last 2 months the stems with the traps have started to droop right down the side of the pot so just before Christmas  we asked the G.S we got it from about it & they said feed it some Baby Bio & make sure we don't touch it (which we don't ) since then it has sprouted a stalk out of the centre which is about 12" tall & looks like it is going to be a flower but the plant looks very sick & looks like it is dying.
Any Idears

Hi fatcat1955
Yes we have kept it topped up with rain water but always at room temp' & as I said we gave it some Baby Bio after speaking to G.S but we had noticed on the label that you're not supposed to feed it with fertilzer, so a bit confussed, do  you or don't you?

You should only feed via the trap. These plants do not have large root systems due to their habitat. That is why they trap flies to supply the food they need.

Everything you could ever want to know about flytraps is on this site.

Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

That is a very good site with lots of good advice on it.

I keep quite a lot of carnivorous plants in a cold greenhouse.  They do need a rest in the winter so try to find a cold room for them at this time of year.  Fly traps don't have traps all year round and they do produce long thin leaves without traps on them.

I never give my carnivorous plants any fertiliser.  They catch their own in the summer.  My pots always sit in an inch of rainwater - even when it's frozen

Also, if that is a flower stalk, you could cut it off to allow the plant to concentrate on growing more trap leaves in Spring
