Title: Diatom
Post by: weedo on November 17, 2008, 13:27
I have recently bought diatom to had to bedding and coop etc to ward off red mite. I have read that you can had to feed for improved general health of birds and to act as a wormer. Apparently 5%. Do you just mix it in when you fill the feeder or do you sprinke a bit on the food each day? Could someone please advise . Thanks :D

sorry weedo cant help, I only use Diatom for the bedding and to douse the chooks if I think they may have crawlies. I prefer to use a proper wormer twice a year

I know diatom works by microscopically scouring creepy-crawlies so they dehydrate. I don't know how it works as a wormer but sounds like it could be like us eating ground glass.
Effective but very uncomfortable. Maybe someone knows if it works. :)

Like Jelly, I'd rather stick to conventional wormers. Safe and effective.

I have some diatom powder and have read that too but haven't tried it in their food. I decided to go for flubenvet instead to be sure that they are properly wormed though I haven't actually wormed them yet as one of them is ill.

But I have noticed that when I sweep out their coop and some of the diatom dust goes on the floor they eat it anyway!
