Encroaching couch grass from neighbouring plot
« on: June 21, 2020, 07:34 »
Thanks to my husband's wise choice when we took on our plot we only have one border which adjoins another plot.

I get couch encroaching from my neighbour's plot but would like to start a raspberry bed along the border (he won't mind the suckers coming up on his side). Would laying some Myplex vertically along the border work? If so how deep would I need to go?

Or are there any other suggestions?

I used some left over pond liner as a vertical barrier to stop my raspberries invading adjacent growing areas, and it worked well (still is, after at least 10 years!)

Mypex should work just as well - couch grass is comparatively shallow rooted so a depth of around a foot should do the trick. Needs to be the proper stuff rather than a cheap alternative which the raspberry suckers would probably be able to puncture and eventually let the couch grass through.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I used Mypex or Yuzet  vertically, and found that couch did find it's way through after a couple years  >:(
What does seem to have worked, so far, is adding an overlapping row of empty plastic compost bags behind the Mypex! (I suppose that's an economy version of Jay's pond liner ::))That sure gave the couch something to think about

Good luck!

Or damp proof membrane, that’s very thick & virtually indestructible, but not free like mums compost bags

I get the problem of next plot holders raspberry canes coming up bordering me and over 6 foot in spread amongst my rhubarb bed. Would,nt mind if he used them and i do,nt like them. Would the compost bags work for me on my side
