I`ve just harvested the last of the beetroot,the bolthardy has been munched by slugs but the chioggia is pristine,has anyone ealse noticed this or do I have picky slugs,I have to admit I find the chioggia looks a bit off putting but tastes good.

Oh i have just finished eating the last of our beetroot and my neighbours
I love beetroot so have it mst lunch times,
had to buy some today from a large supermarket and ughhhh!


it was awful roll on the next harvest...whats the earliest i could be eating my own beetroot again i wonder?

Following an early chidhood trauma involving a hot summer's day, beetroot and spam (and lots of pinky juices) an over-zealous dinnerlady and a sad little boy (me)...I have had a lifelong aversion to the stuff. Unfortunately, my wife considers it a delicacy beyond compare...consequently we will be growing some this year...any tips?

Axe,try the choggia,it`s not red,it`s a sort of straw colour,so no pink juices for you and lovely beetroot for your OH

They come in such a variety - Forono or Cylindra produce stonking barrel-shaped roots, but tender and tasty; the Egyptian beet look like they come out of a storybook; Pronto are brill as babies; and Burpee's Golden is as sweet as honey. You can eat the leaves too: Burpee's Golden and Bull's Blood are best IMO. Loads of heritage varieties, including white, which I haven't got around to yet.

Top tip? Avoid gluts and shortages, and eat them young and tender nearly all year. Start sowing in modules now, and every ten days up to the end of August in succession. Sow up to three 'cluster' seeds per module. You won't need to thin, the beet will push themselves apart as they grow. I sow seven modules every ten days, and it's a doddle to pop them in a dibber hole wherever there's a little space. They are decorative around the edges of beds; no need for rows.

and dont let them get bigger than golf balls before picking even for pickling ...the sugars are diluted the bigger they get

I love beetroot but not to keen on it pickled...

the beetroots we have just finished eating are huge but taste gorgeous!

love'em cooked hot with bubble 'n' squeak, with loadz of cheeeeeese on!

       
    they are also pretty nice sliced cold in a peanut butter butty!

Childhood beetroot was torture because of the vinegar and spam. Stuff you grow is lovely - small, boil for about 10mins, skins slip off - lovely!
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

nice baked in foil not as messy as boiling,if you boil em leave the stalks/leaves on to stop them from bleeding

I bought some from Sainsburys and they're awful too. I like them fresh and hot with butter.Great tips Supersprout. Those  Bolthardys must be sweet if the slugs like them. I cant wait to try sowing them soon.Rain rain go away.

must plant some more this year,as it was our first year last yr we were a bit cautios and undercropped .but my 2 youngest(4 and 2) now have a passion for boiled beetroot :lol: ,as well as olives but i dont suppose i can grow those :lol:  :lol:
