Bees in my Compost heap
« on: August 27, 2019, 19:03 »
Hi all, I have a composter and have had a compost heap adjacent to it. I notice buzzing coming from it about 3 weeks ago so I investigated and I seem to have nest, I'm not bothered just intrigued but not sure what bees they are, see photo.....any info is gladly appreciated

I've had one in a dalek at the plot this year too and have spent a fair bit of time just watching them come and go. The nest's been abandoned now but hopefully there'll be one not too far away next year. In the past at home I've had one in the house wall cavity (hole blocked once they'd left) and one under the decking. The last one was a bit annoying as despite the entrance being next o 2 aubergine plants I didn't get a single fruit  :nowink:

Don't know what type of bee but your compost must be way too dry or they would be moving out ! ;)

Don't I know - it's in the same sheltered spot as when I moved onto the plot and appears to have provided shelter for hedgehogs and now bees. As it's only about 1/4 full and I've got a big heap elsewhere I'm happy to leave it as it is.

There are so many types of bee - maybe a type of solitary bee?

I seem to get some real bruisers in the soil of one of my raised beds (under the bottomless pots I use to keep my beans above ground, and once amidst my potatoes, which delayed the harvest considerably!).  I also noticed a 'nibbling/munching' noise while sitting on my deck once, only to see a small bee cutting a crescent of young wisteria leaf before flying off with it.

Fascinating to watch, and undoubtedly a blessing in the garden.   :)
