The strangest thing happened to me today after reading this thread. For some reason I got in my car and drove to wilkinsons and bought some seed potatoes. Once I left the shop I then proceeded to poundland and bought all sorts of stuff there. Just when I thought the spending spree was over I found myself in a Morrisons store buying cheap little buckets. Whats going on? :D

I live near the big radio transmitters where the time signal is broadcast from. I think they must be broadcasting something else as well cos I went into Wilko's for some sellotape and a ream of A4 paper and came out with shallots, red onions, 3 packets of seeds i didn't need and a big smile on my face.

Such is the power of subliminal advertising & auto suggestion.

I had to walk by our <<insert place beginning with "W">> this morning. I popped my head in & nearly bought some peas I don't need.

I'm going tomorrow with £30 of tokens
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Are they those old record tokens from the 1970's you were on about? Not sure if they will accept them.

I've just had a terrifying thought ....

I think we are .....

fashionable!

Nah!!  it would be the first time in my life.  Can't be.  can it????

PLEASE NO!!! i have spent the best part of 38 years trying to do what i want to do, because i want to not because trends dictate, quietly laughing to myself at the lemmings following fashions. I MAY HAVE TO RETHINK AND GIVE UP MY ALLOTMENTS!!! lol ::)

I think you may escape the fashionable tribe if ....

Your wellies aren't pink  ???and
you don't grow anything recommended by HFW or Jamie.....  (best of all, you don't know who they are)  and
you have a tartan patterned flask for for your proper tea!   :D :D

Then you can be a proper old fashioned allotmenter!   :nowink:

that's a relief ::) no pink wellies or tartan flask, do like HFW though but more for his cooking than his growing!

Well I have been to Brookside Nurseries in Anstey - as detailed in the thread 'Suppliers of Loose Seed Potatoes'. It's not as cheap as Wilkos but still very good value and you can pick and choose a few of everything AND I got onion and shallot sets loose too - also very cheap and you don't have to have any squishy ones.  I'm a very happy customer  :) Thanks for the recommendation DD.

The prices are £1.25 a kilo, admittedly not quite as cheap as Wilko's, but it goes down to £1 a kilo for over 10 kilos (on a par with Wilko's) and with around 90 varieties, not just the bog standard ones, you're like a kid locked in a sweet shop!.
