When will the eggs start?
« on: January 13, 2011, 21:43 »
Hello all,

I have been an avid listener/reader on this site for over a year, since getting my first 2 chooks.  Now I need to write for advice.

My Black Rock is over a year old and lost her feathery friend on New Years Eve.  She has just been introduced to 2 new girls one in lay and one that should start shortly. I've had no eggs for the 5 days they have been together. (They seem to be getting along really well)

Is this normal, when you introduce new hens? How long before the eggs re-start?

Thanks in anticipation ...

SJx  ;)

PS apart from a few afternoon treats and poultry spice in their layers pellets, can I don anything else to help them all settle?

I have a friend here who swears by pasta.  She says if her hens start not to lay as well, she scatters some freshly cooked pasta and they come back into lay.  Don't know if this is true or not, but the hens love it!!!!

Pasta rocks!

The girls love it! Especially cooked spaghetti that I guess looks like worms.

I will cook some up tomorrow... thanks

make sure you give your chooks grit once every 3/5 weeks as this helps digestion and also aids egg ovulation
if the birds in tip top condition everything will soon come together. an  average hen will lay an egg every 26hours for 61 weeks after that they may lay 4 times  week(every bird is different) that is if you are  removing the eggs for consumption otherwise my hens lay no more than 6 before setting down to incubate and hatch
when it comes to age we are all on the same boat.......But some of us  have been on board that that little bit longer

Place a golf ball in each nestbox and either they'll start laying or be playing off scratch in no time ;)
