Growing mistletoe on apple trees
« on: January 23, 2011, 17:12 »
Unsure if this should be here or in the general gardening section.

Has anyone tried growing mistletoe on their apple trees?

I'll wizz it to general gardening, as most folk don't eat mistletoe.

I did it quite a few years ago.

Just scraped a few berries in the axils of the espalier trained tree & lo & behold - it grew.

Tree died a few years later, not sure if connected or not.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

As mistletoe is a hemiparasite, it may have been responsible for killing the host apple tree.

I have three bunches of mistletoe growing on three separate trees.  I just wiped the seed on the bark at the crook of a branch.  Five years later and still no berries, they might all be males. if so I'll cut a couple out.   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I am told it weakens trees significantly. But commercial growers seem to make it work. I tried to grow it in an old apple and an old silver birch but failed each time so I am no real expert. Not too common out our way (North Lincs) in any case and perhaps that is a factor.
