Title: Advice on construction material for raised bed?
Post by: moreteavicar on February 05, 2019, 11:23
Hi
We have just moved into a new home and I am keen to build some raised beds. Not only for their intrinsic benefits, but equally due to my mobility issues.
I am looking for suggestions on which material to use, on a “best bang per buck” basis?

Hi the most cost effective way is 3/4 treated timber from your local timber merchant not the DIY places usually comes in 3.6and 5m lengths in widths from 70mm to 200mm get some treated 2x2 to make stakes for the corners last bed I made was 2.4 x 1.2m or 8 x 4 imperial at a cost of £18.00 in timber.

I went with raised beds a couple of years ago and made 20 RBS with two different types of wood I thought  the second hand  pine flooring boards may not last to long outside so I painted each board this took several days to complete  but worth it in the long run there still in good condition

when i was given some decking boards I had already completed 10 RBS so I made the other 10 with the decking boards they proved to be the best wood for the raised although they had probably been treated with decking paint prior to me getting them  I would recommend if you have builders reclaimed centre near you why not see if they have  some used decking at the rite price for your raised bed project
