Title: Severe weed problem
Post by: argaric on July 07, 2007, 19:25
Hi,
My first post to these forums, sadly with a plea for help. I have read most of the posts and found some reallly good advice and information.
The problem is this; I have taken over a new plot that I have been clearing of couch grass etc (it has not been used for over five years).  I got a good start with one side of the plot (lots of peas, beans and pots) but have been having trouble getting anything else to grow.
The biggest problem is the amount of weeds that have appeared in the beds that I have sown (it almost looks like I have sown the seeds for the weeds myself).
Below are some pictures of what I having to deal with. Any help, advice or comments would be welcome.

  One example of weed:

  Next example:

Nothing growing (except weeds, apart from spinach and beans in farground and right):

You sound as if you are doing well  :D

Just hoe the weed out when they are tiny.  Make sure you leave sufficient space between the veg to get the hoe in.

If you have lots of annual weeds hoeing will get rid of them quite fast.  If you want to sow in soil where you suspect there are lots of weed seeds, draw a broad drill out with a hoe and top with potting compost and sow into this.

welcome to the weed club argaric
the main thing to do is when you prepare the seed bed you are preparing a weed bed at the same time,so what you have to do (in the ideal world) is prepare your bed, then leave it alone for 2-3 weeks so the the weeds germinate then give it a light rotavating just the top 2-3" or use a rake to disturb and kill the germinating weeds, then sow your seeds this will give your veg a head start over the weeds,
failing that keep hoeing and hand weeding

Hi argaric welcome to the forums,

Can't really add to the excellent advice already given, just remember to keep on top of them and you will win in the end.

Weeds are just part of the allotmenteers rich tapestry.

And this is how you should deal with them.
