Title: What rare hens should I breed?
Post by: thomasj on March 13, 2009, 19:01
I have been a chicken enthusiast for a few years and have my own cockerel with some black rocks. I have successfuly raised at least 40 chicks but would love to do some rare breeds.

My question is what is a popular rare breed and does anyone know a supplier of them?

Thankyou in advance

John

Isn't that an oxymoron?  popular and rare?

I'm hoping to raise some Dorking when I get more experience under my belt (have kept hybrids for 2 years and Light sussex for 1 year).  I want to breed for my own consumption though, not at this stage planning on selling to the public.

Orpingtons are a popular breed to start with, docile and good breeders.  there would be local suppliers in the back of Practical Poultry.

Well rare breeds dont tend to be that popular generally speaking. They are hard to get hold of and you really need to join the rare breed club to get to know some quality breeders,  as often people are sold a bird only to find out they are far from the correct standard therefore pointless breeding from. Are you intending to breed? I see you have successful raised chicks already! :) :)
Take your time as well and do plenty of research about your intended breed too. Visit some of the larger poultry shows and talk to some of the clubs there to get some advice and tips.
Here is a link to the rare breed society you might find useful :)
