This is what another plot holder & I have discussed, people then would get some experience before getting a plot of their own. Some councils are not very forward thinking.

Hi JaK - I have just started off my new allotment and the council here is dividing up full plots into 2 halves when they become vacant.  Hence I was given a a half plot a few weeks ago. It is ample size to do a lot of veg and some fruit. Remember that some veg is easier and cheaper to buy... For instance main crop spuds are £1.50 a big bag in our local shops so not really worth growing a lot of that.. Earlies are great to have new spuds on the table and they also do keep well.

You can always get to grips with a second half or a full plot later on. Just grab the half with open arms and get going with it.. A half is beter than none.. I had the same feelings when i was only offered a half but soon realised there is a lot of space. Plant wisely and only enough that you can use and dont waste.   Start slow and build it up to suit your needs.

Within a few weeks I have now been offered the other half of mine as the guy has not paid his subs and disappeared..  :D  :D  now even more work to be done.. !!

Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

I've taken the half plot as it looks pretty good. I also have first refusal on a full plot when available.  :D Happy, happy, happy!

That's in pretty approachable condition.  The soil is good at the moment in my part of the world to get those dandelions and other tap rooted weeds out of the soil - just the right amount of moisture.  You appear to have mainly recent weeds so it shouldn't take too much time and effort (comparatively speaking  ::) ) to get on top of it before winter.

Yes, the soil look's very good to me, nice and dark. I plan to start clearing enough to plant autumn things at the weekend (onions, garlic, rhubarb, shallots and broad beans). The rest will be given more thought before tackling.
I get to keep the little shed and behind the fence at the bottom is a river, so getting water should never be a problem.

This original post, and the subsequent chat and advice seems like a Masterclass in getting enthusiastic about a new plot - it's great, positive news, and an enjoyable read too!

The very best of luck Jak!
