Title: new chick sticky bottom
Post by: grandma berni on April 18, 2011, 16:37
I have a 5 day old chick..we had to help it hatch out of the skin which had dried on him it seems to have been born with 1 splayed leg, we were helping it feed and water as it did not seem to want anything just sleep,  after a couple of days we noticed it had a sticky bum and looked all bunged up so we bathed it and cleared it up he immediatly did 3 large poos and it smelled strong. We continued to help it feed and drink and now he has got it, but his bottom hole looks swollen and looks like a boil. I have just bathed it again and wondered if any one knows what it could be suffering from
thanks berni

Hello Grandma Berni and welcome to the forum.   :)

I am not that experienced with chicks but I am sure someone with more experience will be along shortly to advise you.

In the meantime good luck with your chick and keep us posted

Hi Berni, what you are seeing is called "pasting up"  Keep checking the chick over a couple of times a day to make sure the vent isn't being sealed closed again, and he should pick up soon.  A smear of vaseline will help prevent the faeces from sticking to his sore skin at the moment too.
