Raised raised bed
« on: January 23, 2020, 20:39 »
Serious back injury meant I had to give up allotment & garden. Found an old solid wood table drilled holes, screwed gravel boards on top and have a raised raised bed.
I have some old fence posts and could use them to build more, but what to use as a base?
Would marine ply be OK. If so what thickness, size of holes? Any other ideas.

I would use at least 1/2" thick due to weight of soil + water.
You could use planks or scaffold boards.
Also get a large paint/garden sprayer with pressure and spray nozzle and use that to water rather than a watering can

Just a thing of mine but; With any container I adapt for growing I put the drainage holes in the sides rather than the bottom. My working theory being that there will be a reservoir of moist soil in the bottom.

I have no idea if my theory holds water (pun intended), perhaps someone who knows what they are talking about could comment.

Thanks for the replies. I used to drill holes in the sides of buckets, didn't think of that with the boards. With a 6ftx4ft board I think I'll still put a few holes in it.

Marine ply - tis only plywood constructed with waterproof glue. ( Not many people know that).

Cheers,  Tony. :D
