Spray paint on fencing.
« on: June 14, 2012, 21:24 »
OK I know that I should brush it on but we've just moved and have 100 yards of boarded fence, 6ft high with 6 inch wide vertical boards which needs a paint on both sides.
I have hand painted the posts and some of the boards but it's slow and my shoulder has had it.  Using Fencelife Tudor Black Oak. Needs two coats to cover the various colours previously used.
Does spraying work? No problems with drift onto other side, mine and highway.
Alternative is to pay someone £10 an hour to brush it on.

husband has started spraying our panels as there are loads. He bought it from Asda for £10. You will need to use the sprayer contents up and clean thoroughly after use otherwise it will clog. Also used it to spray weedkiller.

We used to have a paint sprayer for such jobs. The paint brush might be making your shoulder ache, but the paint sprayer is likely to put all sorts of strange vibrations up your hand and arm rendering it totally useless for a time. I'd rather paint, giving both hands a turn. :)

I started painting my fencing by hand but had to give up as it was too hard.  Bought a Cuprinol fence sprayer (hand pump, not electric) and love it.  Big sheet of cardboard to mask anything you want to keep clean and spray on a relatively windless day to prevent drift.  Job done.  :)

You can always get a roller and roll it on rather than brush or spray if those don't work for you.  You might have to handpaint the inside edges but that wouldn't be much.

I'd say roller it, same as Trillium.

With the addition of a pole you don't even have to bend and can cover the entire board with a simple up and down motion - its just a sort of pendulum motion of both your arms and your back is barely involved

I have to use Fencelife Tudor Black Oak because I have replaced some boards and pre-painted them before fixing them to the rails. Fencelife don't do that colour in sprayable paint. Has anyone used a brush type through a sprayer. B&Q do a compatable sprayer for  about £16. A couple of those would be cheaper than, say, 5 hours at £10 per hour.

you could try a bit of watered down paint first and see the result.

Job now done. I bought a B&Q Spray on sprayer and put on 9x6 litre pots of brushing fencelife. £6.99 for 6 litres, much cheaper than sprayable paint.
It was necessary to keep sprayer at max pressure and wash the nozzle a couple of times.
Pumped up sprayer by keeping arm and shoulder rigid and flexing knees.
