apple tree problem
« on: December 20, 2013, 23:00 »
A few of the branches on my apple tree seem to have a light silvery dusting of some type of fungus. It is only affecting this years growth and it is the same on my aunt's trees at the opposite end of the plots. What is it and what should I do now and can it spread to other fruit trees?, sorry no pics they didn't turn out right.

Thanks

Likely to be 'primary' mildew, the overwintering form of the fungus from which the infection will spread as the new leaves emerge in spring.
Cultural control: prune out affected tissues.
Chemical control: Systane Fungus fighter, potassium bicarbonate

Try to open the centre of the tree up by pruning. This will allow air and light to penetrate which helps keep trees fungus/mildew free.

Am I allowed to mention "spray with diluted Jeyes fluid" as the EU hasn't cleared it for this use?

My tree is only going into its 3rd year so its not needing opening up, I think I will have to go with the chemical option as I will lose all last years growth if I have to prune them out.

Mikem, if the chemical isn't cleared for the specific use the site doesn't allow it to be recommended as a treatment

Thanks for all the help
