I have a big stack of old double glazing units that have to be cobbled into a greenhouse in the garden later this year, its going to replace part of the shed, so it will end up as part greenhouse, part shed.

you could be lucky with Freecycle or ebay!
B & Q have a sale on £100 for a 6 x 6ft frame
here
and the polycarb glazing £80 here which is very reasonable  ;)

Better to split the double glazed units and as long as the glass isn't toughened cut it to size.Glazed panels can be got for free/cheap from double glazing places as they have to pay to dump them.
If God didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of food

Like the idea of the firms getting rid of them Lazydog.

I was told though, that they need to be split with care, as they are gas-tight?

'Advice' was, to slowly cut in one corner of the 'sandwich' filling with a Stanley knife, but we must be very careful here, as I haven't tried it yet, so the answer is get some proper advice methinks.

Dawn Louise,
Try Gumtree in your area, Loot.com, Friday Ad...
I got a 8' by 6' aluminium greenhouse with a base for £60 last week. It will go in my home garden.
The day after I got that one home, I spotted an add on Loot and got 8' by 6' aluminium greenhouse, this time for free. This one for my allotment.
Oh that same day I got a phone call off someone else who wanted to sell one for £25 :).
There is a lot of people about selling/giving greenhouses away.
Good luck.

Its easy just wear gloves to be safe, the trick is get a flat sharp knife(you can make one out of industrial hacksaw blades)between the glass and the ali seperator after removing the black tape.Just tease the silicone adhesive apart little at a time, once you have started it gets easier.I have done it loads of times, just be prepared for a few broken panels as you wont know how they have been handled and thrown around causing stress fractures which wont show until you cut to size.
Quite often older panels are just 4mm glass (ideal for what you want)but lower door panels and the patio doors will be no use as they are toughened and just shatter.Bedroom windows and down stairs windows are the ones you want.
This shows what you are trying to undo!

Thanks for that Lazydog!

Like the casters bench - easy way to work!

I don't mind cutting glass, as my local hardware store manager taught me years ago!

I took all our old double glazing, and made about 20 cloches, which are still working, thank goodness!

You can go passed any number of gardens on your way to work to day and if you've got your greenhouse goggles on you will spot several just sitting unloved in the corner.  Then go and knock on the door.

Bet you you can get one for free if you dismantle and take away and will replace any old panes. Bet you £3 million.

I'm into polytunnels (see next point) and I keep my eyes peeled every day for old frames to buy. No luck yet but it's out there and greenhouses are easy to spot in the city.

Polytunnels are easier to maintain cheaper to make and if you don't buy one of the flimsy green ones that blow over in a gust will last.

I made one from water pipes with proper plastic off the net for £67 and it still stand and is fantastic. Glass panes unless reinforced toughened are expensive to replace.

If I was you I'd go knocking on doors and relove an abandoned greenhouse
