Grow Your Own / Re: Plot Preparation

My old plot was very heavy clay. Before I ammended the soil with huge amounts of compost and greengrow I used to grow my root veggies by:
1) Using a long spade to draw a long, thin, deep trench by jabbing the blade deep in the ground and rocking it back and forth to make a v-shaped trench.
2) I'd then fill it with cheap compost and pack it in firmly.
3) sow into the compost so the delicate tap roots could grow down quickly without hitting hard clay or stones.

I got decent size parsnips and carrots like this.

Hi, I'm convinced that since going peat free I've been over watering both seedlings and plants, was also going to use vermiculite to cover seeds but forgot  ::) as it forms quite a hard crust on the top. I'm using the finger test mentioned above and feel my seedlings etc. have performed better so far this year. Not had a problem with blossom end rot as I also make sure bottom of forming toms are clean and free of flower bits etc. TBH this was least of my problems last year as weather and blight did for most of my plants, even tried capilliary matting last year but didn't seem to work. Good job we all like a challenge eh!!

Hi,
if it was my plot I would leave covered to try and get/keep the soil warm as think it's unlikely that there will be hard enough frosts to improve soil structure. Regarding adding compost, might be better if you add grit to try and improve structure/drainage instead and check requirements of the individual type of root veg you want to grow. You could start off beetroot in modules (seedling compost) before you go and put somewhere with a bit of protection and I know some people start off carrots and parsnip too so might be worth trying. I'm only just getting success with carrots direct sown into sieved soil with grit in tall container and pre-chitting parsnip seeds before planting into same mix.

Interesting thread as almost out of my old pellets and have 2.5kg of the new ones so hoping they work!! I've never really thought of putting on paths etc. rather than soil or putting under the winter coverings, usually pull it back and let the wildlife deal with them.
Can anyone tell me why it says don't apply more than 4 times a year? Thank you

My understanding was vat is a 'luxury item' tax. So water is vat free but coca cola isnt. It's the same with biscuits and cakes isn't it? One of them is classed as essential food stuff where the other is classed as luxury
