Lettuce

What are your favourites? The CCA leaf ones I've just grown are a bit tasteless (I've fobbed them off on the people at work.) I've planted a few mixed packets but is there a really tasty variety you would recommend?

I think it depends on your taste - I find rocket a bit too strong tasting. The Arctic King are nice though

interesting question noshed - do young leaves have a taste? I guess most CCA are a subtle balance of flavours (aka tastless!) To get taste stuff needs to stay in the ground longer - so you need to grow bigger lettuces - so switch to hearting varieties or oakleaf types that grow bigger without running to seed.

Or as John suggests try Rocket and some of the oriental mustards which are very peppery. Also sow winter purslane in the autumn - will survive all winter if covered and has quite a strong taste.

Thanks I've got some Rocket to try and I'll have a go at Arctic King and maybe some cos - my dad used to grow them.
