Thanks for posting.

Have struggled to grow parsnips for the last few years and not thought about container growing.

What variety are they and how many seeds do you sow in each container?

I have some buckets that are about 10 - 11" deep, would they be deep enough?

I'm guessing that the water tanks have sufficient strength from their intended use , was wondering if the storage containers of similar size that are available in discount stores etc have the required strength.
we also rescue rabbits and guinea pigs, grow own veg

I've successfully grown parsnips in the black 'builders' buckets that you can pick up for £1 or so (up to 8 per bucket, although they obviously don't grow big and are best described as baby veg) and cheap plastic storage crates (they do become brittle after several years outside but as long as you don't bash them they keep going).

I do, however, always chit my seeds these days - I find old seed (3 -4 years old) germinates perfectly well using this method.

The variety i grew was Kings Tape Seeds Palace F1. I have already got next seasons seeds. They are dearer than loose seeds but in my opinion well worth it.

My soil is derived from boulder clay...heavy and stony so I've grown my parsnips in containers for years. I use plastic flower buckets from Morrisons. Cut out most of the bottom, set on an old tile or piece of hardboard, fill with compost then sow the seed about one inch apart. I start mine off in the greenhouse and once the seedlings are away I thin them out, pick up the whole lot, tile included and move out to plot. Slide out the tile from underneath and set the bucket on the soil. This allows the parsnip roots to get down into the soil for water/nutrients. My best yield was almost 3kg of good roots from a single bucket. I had to split the bucket to get them out!

Starting off in the greenhouse also means the seed doesn't go into cold soil. Germination rate is usually 80 percent plus.

Now that method might help me as the soil is not really deep enough for really good parsnips solway cropper. How many parsnips do you leave in each bucket?

Roger, I got blessed the other day with a truck load of wood chips!  A tree service that has been clearing the electric lines in the area brought me a load and dumped it.  A HUGE blessing, that.

I've put down a couple inches of mulched leaves on the garden this fall, as I don't really need new chips there just yet but when I need them, this time they'll be as close as a wheelbarrow trip away.   :)

Sunshineband, I usually leave a dozen or so snips in each bucket.

Interesting to read Mr Dog's post about successfully growing from 3 - 4 year old seeds . I thought the seeds had to be fresh to be successful .

As well as the plastic buckets I mentioned earlier,  I have some of the Morrisons flower buckets that Solway Cropper referred to , will give that method a go,

Solway Cropper,  When did you sow in the greenhouse?
