JCB Cultivator - help please
« on: August 30, 2010, 17:25 »
Hi
I have a JCB cultivator with a Tecumseh Prisma 37 'Meppy 3.7' engine.
When under load the engine hunts and then stalls.  It has a no-adjustment carburettor.
I would be very grateful if anyone could give me an idea of what the problem could be.
Thanks, Steve.

Has it only just started to do this?
Did it run out of fuel just before starting to do it?
How old is the fuel in your fuel can?

I was given the cultivator not working so don't know when the problem started.
It has fresh fuel in it.
It starts up ok but the problem seems to exist when the engine gets warm and it is under load.

Very often fuel gets left in the machine for long periods of time.As it evaporates, it leaves a build up of tarnish within the tank and carburettor. This impedes the flow of petrol within the carb resulting in the kind of symptoms you are describing. It matters not a hoot if the petrol that you have put in afterwards is fresh, all you are doing is washing more tarnish from within the fuel tank down into the carb.
I would suggest stripping the carb of the machine, and either taking it to your local machinery dealer to have it cleaned, or stripping it down yourself and buying a tin of Carb cleaner and doing it at home.
Having said the above, however, the "un-adjustable" carb's are prone to this "hunting" as they get older. There isn't much you can do about it. I hope that your machine has just had the fuel left in it too long by the previous owner, and a good clean out of the fuel system will ease the problem for you.
Regards.

The float chamber gasket was not seated properly and indicated the float chamber being stuck on the rubber gasket.  Also, the throttle and govenor linkage were not fitted back in the right place after the gentleman who gave it to me had had it serviced and was told it was beyond economic repair.
Thanks again for your help it was very much appreciated.  I am one happy cultivator owner. Steve.
