Title: Chilli seeds
Post by: Yabba on August 26, 2008, 10:53
I was thinking of growing chillis next year, as I'll be able to free up my tiny lil' 6' x 8' greenhouse and use it just for them and peppers. Ideally I'd like to grow a range of different varieties rather than just a greenhouse full of the same variety.

So, my question(s) : where's the best place to get chillis from and do any of you have any recommendations for varieties to grow?

I'd like to avoid any F1 style varieties as I'm trying to save my own seed from everything I grow ... mainly because I'm tight fisted, but also because I like the whole idea of being self-sufficient with seeds as well as produce.

I have quite a few seeds I brought back from Indonesia last year. I only planted one this year and it has grown and is fruiting with about 12 chilli's on it. I have three different varieties but have no idea what their names are as I just got the chilli's from a market, de-seeded them and brought them home. I am going back there this year so will get some different types. You are welcome to try these three types if you like, I have enough to spare.

I'm up for chilli seed swaps.

I'll list all mine when I get chance.

I can probably rustle up a plant or two as well.

I'm afraid I don't have anything to swap this year as I'm just getting into the whole "keep your own seeds" lark :( ... unless you like dahlias,if all goes to plan we'll have a fair few spare tubers at the end of the year.

I'd love to see a list of what you grow though :D

I've actually taken a quick look around both of those sites since I posted ... they certainly have some interesting ones!

Is a top company to deal with, they're from
across the pond but service is brilliant.
They also through in some free packs.

Wouldn't bother with chilliseed.co.uk myself
unless you're after the chocolate bih jolokia seeds.
Gerald can be slow to deal with and hard work sometimes.

My seed list looks like this just now.

African Sun Habanero (Big Sun)
Aji Dulce Yellow
Apache
Bermuda Hot
Birds Eye
Bishop's Hats
Bonda Ma Jaque
Burkina hot
Chocolate Bih Jolokia
Dorset Naga
Dundicut
Hot Lemon
Joe Longs
Little Elf
Naga Jolokia pc-1
Padron
Pimento De Padron
Portugese Medium
Purple Prince
Red Hot Carribean Habs
Safi
Satin's Kiss
Scotch Bonnets
Serrano
St Helena
Tabasco
Thai Dragon
Thai Orange
Twilight
Unkown Naga type
Verigated Striped Hot ?
Yellow Habs

At the end of the season(when the fruit ripens) i should have Trinidad Scorpion, 7pod and Thai Mound seeds.

I'll second that.  I've bought from them this yr, quicker to respond than many uk companies, lots of interesting varieties and quite cheap.

I got a 'fatili' chilli plant via ebay, the guy did a stunning job packaging a 3 inch seedling to resist the Royal Mail Parcel Destruction System. Its now about 18 inches high and got about 12 fruits on, the longest being 3 inches and a deep black/green.

Ima going to save seeds and try and get more going next year from it.

Anyone got any advice on germinating chilli seeds ?

I just plant mine as normal and have had over 90% come up.

I even plant them from fresh and dried bought chillies.

So, can I just ask something as I love eating chillis - can I just go to a supermarket, buy some chillis, and plant the seeds from inside it?

I did.

I let them dry first. I don't know if that's correct or not but it worked.

I guess it's just like collecting seeds from any other plants.

You can, but you may not end up with the same pods as they cross easily. I put tulle round unopened flowers so I know all the seeds from these pods will be 100% pure! Very very time consuming (got 300 or so plants!!)

Just a suggestion, on your descriptions page it'd be nice if you had plant height/width ( or spacings ) ... it'd help muppets like me when they're deciding what will fit in a space ;)

When you say that you put tulle ( a fine mesh right? I had to google it  ) around the flower, do you mean like you would with tomatoes or do you mean over the whole plant? I'd really like to be able to save seed from whatever varieties I get.

This year I have grown

Orange Habs
Chocolate Habs
Bhut Jolokia
Naga Jolokia
Bih Jolokia
Naga Morich
Fatali
Hot Lemon
Purira
Marbles
Goats weed
Scorch Bonnet
Hungarian Hot Wax
Aurora
Big Banana

All of which have fruit on them now. Albeit very small fruit in some cases.
They all came from chilliseeds.co.uk and I had an excellent germination rate with them, 140 plants out of 160 seeds, which considering the varieties I am growing aint bad at all, but you takes yer choice.......

May have a problem now though 'cos my Hot Lemons are turning red!!!!! and my Chocolate habs are going Orange!!!!!! I was very careful not to mix the seeds up, so i'll have to wait for all the others to rippen so that I can see whats going on!!! My view may diminish.

I tried on of my rippened Naga Jolokia fruits the other day.

Whoa yer fighter they're hot

Can't wait to try the even hotter ones.................NOT!!!

Hoo hoo, I'm excited for harvesting a chilli fomr my Dorset Naga. Super hot, one I would recomend is Cayenne chillies. My seeds are over 2 years old and germinate in 6 days :D easy and not too hot. You can get some good Cayenne seeds from wilkos, ebay or other growers :)

I got a mixture of chillie seeds off e-bay. Sure I did all the right things but still waiting for the plants to flower in the poly tunnel!  They were transferred to the polytunnel in May when they were big enough to pot on.
It`s been a nice warm summer up here in the Highlands so what have I done wrong?

If they don't then I'll claim my postage back :| ... although you'll win with your "air-fare to indonesia" trump card ;)

You'll be pleased to know that I've labelled the bags 1, 2, 3 ... can't wait to see which one is small, large, curly :D
