something is eating the roots of my Pak Choi
« on: September 09, 2010, 19:07 »
I planted some Pak Choi in a large pot and it has been a huge success. How come the supermarkets charge so much when they are so easy and quick to grow?

But  :(

I noticed that 2 plants had wilted and were dying yesterday. When I pulled them out I found that their root system was no longer. When I explored the soil where the roots had been I found very small white wriggly grubs. What are they? What should I do?

Help!

Cabbage root fly!
Burn em or bag em up tightly and throw them in the bin.

I have just googled the beastie and have got a positive ID!

Can I save the other plants in the pot or should I total the lot?  :(

my pak choi are being eaten from above ground would they be classed as a brassica so therefore should I have protected them as such ?? so to jump on your posting   :D they were a free seed packet so dont know a lot about them
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

I saw a cabbage white butterfly look very interested in them when they were little and so have kept them under cover since.

If you look closely at your plants you will probably see the camouflaged green caterpillars that hide in the bottoms of the leaves.

Protected they have done wonderfully up to now. The green pak choi hybrid F1 has grown easily and looks just as good as those sold in Waitrose! The purple variety have been lankier and prone to bolt.

I will definitely grow them again next year
