Its my birthday at the start of April and there have been a few years where I have celebrated with a snowball fight although that was "up north" not here in Devon.

I am so pleased that I did not get taken in by the good weather two weeks ago, as we have had sleet, snow, gales for the last 24 hours and an emergency severe weather warning has just been issued with up to 45 cm of snow possible.
Today in the Times, there was confirmation that the end of March is well known for severe cold weather, not only in  the UK but across Europe as well.
There are many ancient folklore tales about the likelihood of extreme cold at the end of March. There is the rhyme :- March borrowed from April, Three days and they were ill, The first was Snow and sleet, The next was cold and wet, The third was such a freeze, The birds' nests were stuck to trees.
There is also meteorological evidence for this pattern. So do not get caught out next year!

Hi guys,

Im new to this veg growing, do you think it is worth covering my beds for tonight as there is a predicted ground frost here in Kent. I have early spuds in and lots of varoius seeds sown direct over the weekend, nothing above ground yet.

Thanks  :)

Be prepared to lose your courgettes :( It's too cold and too early for them

If I were you I would start some more in a couple of weeks, but indoors on a windowledge. They can't really go outside till mid may and even then you would have to cover them if we had a late frost :( if you can't sow indoors then IMO do not sow direct until the end of may/beginning  of june..sorry :(

The others will probably be ok where they are, fingers crossed it won't get too bad :)

my courgettes are in pots in the greenhouse and are just showing. They will be going outside in about 5 weeks. first early carrots are showing (under cloches) and the sky is darkening -  we are in for a storm!
