I usually associate the last week of March with the strong possibility of snow, wind and frosts. It happens frequently!!

Interesting that most people apart from realfood seem to think that snow in March is unusual!!

thanks swing swang and babstreefern, that's reassured me, I will get on with planting them this weekend. Think I might sort out some fleece or bubblewrap just in case the frosts are deeper than currently forecast. It will also come in later on in season if we have late frosts after the shoots are through.

Thanks :)

I remembered, many years ago, I think sometime in the 70s, and it snowed in June

I remembered seeing on the news, at a game of cricket, that they drew the date in the snow :tongue2:

The fact is, our climate is so unpredictable that even the met office struggles to get an accurate forecast for tomorrow, let alone next week. Just do what you want and be as prepared as possible but if the worst happens take it on the chin and try again.

I sowed my first early potatoes at the weekend . . .  :( I just went down to my allotment and protected the area with ground cover. It won't snow here in the south but we're expecting overnight frost.

You don't have to worry about overnight frost until they are growing above ground.
The earth is protecting them now, and when they grow through you can earth them up a good few times. When they have grown through all of that lot, only then do you need to worry about fleece, or covering them, when a late frost is forecast.

I am so pleased that I did not get taken in by the good weather two weeks ago, as we have had sleet, snow, gales for the last 24 hours and an emergency severe weather warning has just been issued with up to 45 cm of snow possible.
Today in the Times, there was confirmation that the end of March is well known for severe cold weather, not only in  the UK but across Europe as well.
There are many ancient folklore tales about the likelihood of extreme cold at the end of March. There is the rhyme :- March borrowed from April, Three days and they were ill, The first was Snow and sleet, The next was cold and wet, The third was such a freeze, The birds' nests were stuck to trees.
There is also meteorological evidence for this pattern. So do not get caught out next year!
