There doesn't seem to be a pond board so I will just leave my post here and maybe a mod will redirect, please.
There is a very wet patch on my plot so I thought to make it official and do a proper pond. But do I line it? Or, as the water comes in from below, will the liner stop the water from going in? I don't think there is a spring there, it just seems to be rainwater.
I was envisaging a seasonal pond that might dry up in summer (if we ever get any) and preferably low-maintenance.
Has anyone else done this?

I'd dig a hole to the intended depth of the pond and see what happens over a period of time - although it's usual to have a liner (or even a pre-formed fibreglass "shell") both can be lifted back out by the pressure of water from below if the water table is high enough.

If you have no liner, then the pond will almost certainly be seasonal only.
I see what Jay has said above re liners being lifted if ground water levels increase, but I would have thought that the weight of the water in the pond would probably be sufficient to hold a butyl liner in place.
He may have experience of this happening though, so take what I say alongside his advice, won't you?

I found an old baby bath abandoned in the back lane right outside our back door. I'm taking it as a sign that I'm meant to have it. So I will use it as the base of my pond.
Next question should I leave the plug out or in?

But might it not stop the water from running in ?

I don't think it will fill up from the bottom unless you put it in a hole full of water, you might find that it won't be big enough not to need topping up with water from other sources as there won't be enough surface area to catch enough rain,you could link it up to a shed with guttering though.

At the mo it would be a hole full of water as I'm going to put it at the wet end of the garden(miles away from the shed unfortunately). I thought that if I bury the babybath it will keep a small amount of water in dry ??! times, enough to let any mud creatures survive through a possible drought. And so I don't have to have to keep filling it up every time we have a dry week. I've answered my own question there - plug should be in. ;)
