Horse manure good for potatoes
« on: April 08, 2009, 22:41 »
I've got the possibility of getting well rotted horse manure next week from a colleague who owns a farm. I'm going to put my potatoes in the allotment next week so was wondering if it'll do them some good to put the manure a the bottom of the trench.

They'll love it as long as it's not contaminated. (Pyralid)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

It shouldn't be, I've used it before & worked well. Do I need to mix it with the soil or put it at the bottom of the trench?

THanks, can't wait to give it a go. I got quite a few radishes coming & beetroots as well as leeks I think (not sure as I'm not sure what the seedlings would look like ).

Leeks look like this......

I think plant lables are now freely available on the open market. You could try those.

Ah...
My leeks don't look anything like this! They are very tiny with a couple little round leaves on each side.

I'll try to take a photo in the next few days.

I mistakenly planted spuds one year in bags in pure manure instead of compost (wasn't paying attention) - got a fantastic harvest. They loved it.
