Title: Cucumbers. How tall ? Direct sun?
Post by: Thamesmeadhammer on March 16, 2010, 16:21
Just a quick question after searching on here and I'm unable to find the right answer.

How tall does your average cucumber plant grow too ?

Also some books say ok in direct sun and others say shaded area !

Please help.

the answer to the height is it depends on variety.

I've had some grow up to the roof and along the ridge in the greenhouse but i've also grown some that stayed quite short ::)

Have you got a variety in mind?

The cues variety I grew last year didnt liked to climb. One was on the pot at backyard and couple were at plot. I tried hard to train them but they were happy on the ground. probably normal training is not good with them.
this year I am going to plant some on the manure mound as I always have nostalgic memories of cues growing on manure mounds

I grew a couple of Marketmore in flower buckets, in the unheated greenhouse last year, just to get an early crop.  They grew up the wigwam so about 4ft and then headed west and strangled a tomato, so I'd say 6 feet for that variety.

PS the wigwam also had horizontal supports of twine in 3 stages to help them climb.

Marketmore are sold as an outdoor crop, but I got cuces about 5 weeks earlier than the outdoor ones.
