Tomatoes and October holidays
« on: September 05, 2011, 11:02 »
  I've just booked at holiday from mid to late October.  My greenhouse is still heaving with green tomatoes.  Obviously they've got 6 weeks or so to ripen before I go, but before I go, should I pick any green ones and bring them indoors to ripen or should I just leave them on the plant until I get back?  Decisions, decisions....what would you do?

Obviously pick all red ones and any turning.......I'd leave any all green ones where they are unless the weather has turned cold by then.
If that's the case I'd pick them chop & freeze them for tomato chutney making when you get back :D

I just spread them on paper towels on window ledges in a heated room once it gets too cold for them to ripen in the greenhouse. Within a couple of weeks they're ready to eat

Or keep them in a dark drawer, then bring them out as you want to ripen them, a few at a time  :D

I find that if the tomatoes aren't fully grown, or they are very green, then they don't ripen anyway, just shrivel up  :(

It is wirth trying the big ones, though, as you say :)

As a guide, those that have changed from green to pale green, and are full size, will ripen OK  :)

Oh no, I'd only try this if they were fairly mature and not dark green  :)
