Tomatoes and a cold greenhouse.
« on: April 28, 2015, 18:59 »
I am taking my toms and bell peppers out to the greenhouse daily but it is a chore with arthritic knees, I don't want to lose my plants as they are doing well and with sturdy stems, I have fleece but I am reluctant to chance losing my toms, how do others manage, cheers Dave
Today i will be mainly wearing no trousers

I have 10 tom standard plants, and 4 bush toms in pots in a cold (but twin wall polly carb) greenhouse and they are doing very nicely. So are my tatties in tubs.
As the greenhouse catches the early morning sun, its never long before the roof opens. Even today (snow, sleet, wind and hail) its been very warm in there.
At this time of the year frost never lingers for long in my garden.

Your greenhouse must be very sheltered - I'm getting readings as low as 1 or 2C overnight and tomatoes just don't like it that cold - even if only for a little while  :(

Yes, it does warm up during the day, but that heat doesn't last very long once the sun goes in.

Heated bench with a polycarb cold frame on top. It provides just enough heat to keep things happy and saves me carrying trays of plants up and down 8ft of steps to the greenhouse each day.  :nowink:

I carry my plants in and out as required. Like mumofstig I've had reading of 3 degrees in my polytunnel despite it hitting a high of 40 degrees in there during the day.

Mines cold too at times and I have no electricity out there, so in and out every day it is, tedious though it may be.

i wouldn't leave them out there. the sunny days and cold nights are making a massive temp swing at the moment.

I only have the option of a blow away so mine are still indoors permanently at the moment - I have big patio doors which get lots of light so I put some greenhouse shelves there and the plant live there until it warms up a bit more... I leave the house at 6.30am when it is still cold so I won't risk putting them out then

Many thanks for all the replies, judging by all the different locations we are all in the same boat doing the hokey cokey, I like lardmans idea, I have twin wall and heat mats so maybe next year, cheers Dave

I've had my tomato plants in my cold but bubblewrapped greenhouse since they were 2 inches high.  I'm a bit further south than you Dave, but they are doing really well at the moment (fingers crossed!)

I leave the bubble wrap on all year, it helps keep things a bit cooler in the summer as well as a bit warmer in the winter!

I'm doing a slight experiment this year. Some of my tomatoes I'm bringing in and out and others have been stood in a wilko plastic greenhouse within my greenhouse since late March.

The ones that have been outside all the time are slightly stockier but otherwise I can't see any difference. Both sets are now potted into 9cm pots and some of each are beginning to show flowers.

I'll keep them labelled and see if there's a noticable difference in the crop.

it will be good to hear your results. this may be the way for me next year. as the inside greenhouse is only small i would be able to bubble wrap it too.

anything that saves a bit of effort is good in my view.

I have a mini greenhouse inside my polytunnel which zips up. The really tender stuff stays in there when very cold. i put a tea light and pot 'heater' on the bottom shelf of I think its going to get too cold. Everything is doing almost too well  ::)
The downside is it can get waaaaay too hot on nice days so need to remember to uncover them all otherwise they would cook. That is tricky as when I leave for work the sun isn't yet on the tunnel, and my garden is a bit of a frost trap, so I have to take a chance and guess what the day will bring.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.
