Whats this?
« on: August 05, 2008, 16:22 »

It came out of the compost, note the peg for size comparison. It has doubled in size since and that was 2 weeks ago.

We dont remember eating anything looking like this. We had pumpkins at Halloween but we've never had marrow or courgette from fresh. Certainly never put seeds in the compost. Melon and Watermelon seed has no doubt got in there but the leaves dont seem the right shape. I have eaten some exotic Tesco fruits now and again, could be one of these maybe. Can anyone offer any ideas?

If i know what it is i know when to pick it!

Thanks

Lee

Looks like a Lebanese courgette, I am growing some and they are just this shape and grow very quickly. I will post a pic up later for you to compare.

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

I might be wrong, won't be the first time (ha ha!)

Good job the peg was there for size

Hang on, what kind of peg is that?
An Asda peg?
Lidle?
T***O?
Local Market?

This needs to be investigated

Any clues

Is it trailing, or a bush variety?

It's the same shape as as the butternut squash I gew a few years back.

I'd I've thought that if this was a couple of weeks ago & it was a courgette, It'd be a marrow now!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

This is the photo of the lebanese courgette, the 2 small ones on the front row. The larger one on the end left is an overgrown one. I think these look similar.

ldavison10,

A story that might help - we grew gemsquash from South African seed three years ago, as well as other cucurbits (so plenty of opportunity for cross-pollination). We took some of the fruit to Portugal in our suitcase where Dad planted some of the seeds. He got two different looking plants the following year; one type looked similar to gemsquash but tasted like pumpkin, whereas the other looked like pale/stripey calabash that was watery with no taste.

I assume that our gemsquash were F1s that may also have cross-pollinated, and consequently their progeny differed from the cultivars that we had sown in the UK.

My guess is that you've got a cucurbit that could easily be a courgette, but might also be a cross, or even a 'parent' from an F1 hybrid if that's what you grew the year before. The fact that it doesn't look much like anything that you've sown doesn't surprise me in the light of experience.

Hopefully you're lucky and the fruit tastes great!
