Hi all I'm new here and need some advise I am currently on a small allotment of 5 plots I have recently been made chair person for our association. we have one water tap and it has been brought to my attention that we don't pay for the water, the tap has been there for 30+ years! so do i carry on regardless or do i contact the water board and explain the situation as I don't want to be responsible for a back dated water bill please any advise would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome :D Be good to know more about your site, and you own plot too when you have time
Are you sure the water comes from the mains? I only ask as ours has a bore hole source

Was the site previously run by the Council? If so, they may still be paying the bill.

Yes I think it was once council and there is a council building adjacent to our site I suspect it maybe be piped from their supply. Still I don't know what to do for the best really. I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth but I don't want to be held responsible for it either as like I say the site is over 30yrs old and no one has ever questioned it before.

TBH I would assume it is still their responsibility if they've never done anything to make the site responsible for the charges.
If they suddenly realise they could make you pay from that point, but not retrospectively, as it was their mistake not to pass the charges on.
Just a thought, who do you pay your rent to? We pay our rent to the council, and they pay the water rates - the charges are nothing to do with our allotment association.
