black spots on spuds
« on: June 10, 2007, 19:27 »
Does anyone know what these spots are?  are they ok to leave or terminal?

About half my early spuds have them but not the maincrop.

Hmm, so does that mean I can leave them be and risk the spuds themselves being ok, or should I dig up all the spotty plants now and hope the spuds are edible?

Lift them as required and eat promptly.  As the link says, tubers are seldom affected & "is usually evident only after several months of storage".

What can I add?

OK, I'll hope it doesn't spread to the rest as well then.  I think my toms have something similar too.  could be where the spuds got it?

Yes exactly crowndale  their both from the same family and therefore susceptible to the same diseases and pests, all my outdoor toms are very badly hit by it, I've sprayed them with cheshunt compound to see if that helps, but if not they will all have to go in the bin.

My indoor tom's are fine, but I banked on growing 95% of them outside so I now have 4 plants that are any good.    that's life I suppose.

Yeah, the Irish know a fair bit about tattie blight after it caused the 1845-9 famine which killed a million  :!:

does anyone know if early blight left untreated will progress on to become late blight? It looks like they are two different things accoding to the link Aunt  Sally gave.

I suspect I have a whiff of it on my tatties.
Organic :)

Just back from the allotment and dug up the remaining earlies (pentland Javelin) I took the other half 5 days ago when I noticed blight symptoms.

The 'whiff' of blight has now taken hold and progressed in that time from brown spots as descibed in the other post, to large brown patches and yellowing dying leaves.

It looks like my tomatoes are going to get it too

Oh well, what can you do..

On a postive note for those of you that don't have blight, I would follow WG's advice and leave your earlies in a bit longer, in the 5 day gap (no rain) between lifting my earlies the difference in the size of the tubers was really a surprise to me, this lot are a much better size.

Yes, not too sure of the progression of the disease but I'd be fairly sure that, by the time you noticed Early Blight on tatties, it would have already infected anything else that it was going to get.

I have dug up the spuds affected by the blight and they look ok, if a bit on the small side, so shall be eating them for my tea tomorrow.  Got around 4 lbs from 4 plants.

I dug the spuds at 5pm, by 7pm there was two lots of cat pooh in the newly turned earth.  B****** cats.
