Can I replant my carrots?
« on: July 16, 2008, 15:01 »
I am new to growing stuff this year so have lots of questions to ask :)

I have planted some carrots which are a special type for growing in big pots.

When planting the seeds I wasn't sure how many to do so just sprinkled loads in.

Few weeks on and they are growing really well only problem is they are all VERY close to each other and very crowded and it is too late to do any thinning (which I have only just read up on).

Is it possible for me to pull them all out and either plant them in the ground or spread them out across more pots? Or will pulling them out kill them off/stop the growing process.

I'll try and post a picture when I get home to give a better idea.

too late to do thinnings?  Poppycock    All you are doing is removing a carrot plant whether it is a seedling or a mature one, allowing space for the others to fill the space just vacated.

The biggest problem is carrot fly - thinning "damages" the carrot and releases a scent which attracts the carrot fly to the source.  The risk of carrot fly infestation of the remaining carrots is raised.  I think the general advice is to do the thinnings in an evening when carrot fly activity is at its lowest.

Use the "thinnings" in salads or cooking, but don't bother replanting.  I vaguely recall someone posting a photo of why replanting carrot seedlings was not such a good idea - not a single one was straight or even resembled the carrot as we know it.
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.
